The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) is a union that represents workers in the maritime industry, including those who work in loading and unloading cargo on and off ships, as well as the operation of all equipment related to cargo handling. The ILA also provides labor for maintenance operations, warehouse operations, and deep-sea shipping. The ILA is committed to creating job opportunities, providing better educational resources, and improving benefits for its members. The ILA has a long history, dating back to the 1800s, and continues to serve its members and the maritime industry today.​

Consulting a Latin dictionary led McClintock to a passage from <em>De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum</em> (“On the Extremes of Good and Evil”), a first-century B.C. text from the Roman philosopher Cicero.
